The Foothills

Castlemoreton Common, Malvern Hills

Transformational redevelopment of a much-altered Victorian farmstead and its large commercial chicken sheds to create a sustainable new home rooted in the landscape within this 2.5ha site. A new redbrick ‘barn’ fronts the Common, creating a drive-through garage with large bat-loft above, and giving the impression of a historic building that subtly screens this contemporary new home from the road within the AONB. The design for this striking building is inspired by the profile of the Malvern Hills beyond, and the character of agricultural barns in the region. The client’s passion for landscape, cultivation and gardening is addressed with a new garden-building and home office, flanked on each side by substantial greenhouses. The introduction of a large balancing pond creates a beautiful focal point, whilst supporting ecology and managing pre-existing drainage and flood issues. A new tractor shed and workshop prevents any views of the extensive PV array being visible from the house or wider landscape. This super-insulated new home with PVs and GSHP achieves an EPC rating of A+. Full RIBA Services provided through all stages. Phases 1 and 2 only completed to date.
